RKI GX-6100: Portable 6 Gas Monitor
A complete overview of the RKI GX-6100 multi-gas detector, the most versatile portable confined space monitor and VOC detector in RKI’s lineup.
When it comes to portable air monitoring, few instruments pack as much capability into a single handheld unit as the RKI GX-6100. Whether you’re entering a confined space, investigating a potential gas leak, screening for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at an environmental site, or conducting breathing zone monitoring during a remediation project, the GX-6100 is engineered to handle it all.
The GX-6100 is the latest multi-gas detector released by RKI Instruments and is the smallest 6-gas sample draw detector currently available in their lineup. It monitors up to 6 gases simultaneously, supports an expanded sensor ecosystem including PID, IR, PPM-range combustible, and super-toxic sensors, and backs its core 4-gas sensors with up to 3-year warranties, a significant value proposition for teams managing equipment budgets.
In this post, we cover what makes the GX-6100 stand out, how its sensor configuration works, key specifications, and which applications it’s best suited for.
-
What Is the RKI GX-6100?
The GX-6100 is a powerful handheld instrument capable of simultaneously monitoring up to 6 gases. At its core, it is a 4-gas confined space monitor, measuring Lower Explosive Limit (LEL) combustibles, oxygen (O2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), and carbon monoxide (CO), the standard suite required for confined space entry under OSHA guidelines.
Beyond the standard 4 gases, the GX-6100 features 2 additional interchangeable smart sensor slots that accept PID, PPM, IR, or super-toxic sensors. The updated GX-6100 can also measure combustible gases in both PPM range and % volume in the same monitor, a capability that significantly expands its utility for leak detection and line purge applications.
The instrument can operate as a single-gas PID unit or a fully loaded 6-gas multi-gas detector, making it one of the most configurable portable gas monitors on the market. The GX-6100 is the smallest 6-gas sample draw detector available from RKI Instruments, a meaningful advantage for field personnel who carry equipment throughout long shifts.

Standard 4-Gas Configuration: The Confined Space Foundation
The four standard sensors cover the atmospheric hazards most commonly encountered in confined space entry and general industrial hygiene monitoring. All four carry up to a 3-year warranty on the new ceramic-type R sensors.
LEL — Lower Explosive Limit / Combustible Gas Monitor
Detects combustible gases and vapors as a percentage of the lower explosive limit. Detection range: 0–100% LEL, with alarm set points at 10%, 25%, and 50% LEL. Accuracy: ±5% of reading or ±2% LEL. The TE (thermal conductivity) sensor also allows measurement up to 100% volume for methane — useful for line purge testing.
O2 — Oxygen Detector
Monitors atmospheric oxygen levels continuously. Detection range: 0–40.0% vol. in 0.1% increments. Low alarm at 19.5% vol. and 18.0% vol.; high alarm at 23.5% vol. Accuracy: ±0.5% O2. Detects both oxygen-deficient and oxygen-enriched atmospheres.
H2S — Hydrogen Sulfide Detector
Detection range: 0–200 ppm in 0.5 ppm increments. Alarm set points at 5.0, 30.0, and 100.0 ppm. TWA: 1.0 ppm; STEL: 5.0 ppm. Accuracy: ±5% of reading or ±2 ppm. Critical for wastewater, oil and gas, and industrial confined space applications.
CO — Carbon Monoxide
Detector Detection range: 0–2,000 ppm in 1 ppm increments. Alarm set points at 25, 50, and 1,200 ppm. TWA: 25 ppm; STEL: 200 ppm. Accuracy: ±5% of reading or ±5 ppm. Essential monitoring for any enclosed or poorly ventilated workspace.
Warranty note: 3-year warranty covers material and workmanship on R sensors (LEL, O2, H2S, CO). IR sensors carry a 2-year warranty. TE and PID sensors carry a 1-year warranty (2 months for the 11.7 eV lamp).

The 2 Smart Sensor Channels: Expanding to 6 Gases
The GX-6100’s two interchangeable smart sensor slots auto-recognize sensor changes and accept a wide variety of sensor types, giving users the flexibility to configure the instrument for their specific application without purchasing a dedicated meter for each gas.
PID Sensors — Photoionization Detector / VOC Detector
- A photoionization detector (PID) uses UV light to ionize gas molecules, enabling detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at very low concentrations. The GX-6100 supports up to two PID sensors simultaneously and offers four lamp options:
- 10.6 eV (Standard/Low Range): 0–4,000 ppm | 0.1 ppm resolution below 600 ppm | 600 VOC library
- 10.6 eV (High Range): 0–40,000 ppb | 1 ppb resolution below 5,000 ppb | 600 VOC library
- 10.0 eV (Benzene-Specific): 0–50 ppm | 0.01 ppm resolution | Pre-filter tube for low-level benzene detection
- 11.7 eV (High Voltage): 0–1,000 ppm | 0.1 ppm resolution below 100 ppm | Detects higher ionization energy compounds
When configured with a PID sensor, the GX-6100 includes a built-in library of over 600 VOC gases, a customizable favorites list of 30 frequently used VOCs, and a recent-use list of the last 8 selected gases. PID sensors on the GX-6100 are engineered to resist humidity — a common challenge in field environments.
ppm MOS CH4 — Methane Detector (PPM Range)
The new ppm MOS (metal oxide semiconductor) CH4 sensor detects methane in the 0–5,000 ppm range in 10 ppm increments, far below what the LEL sensor can resolve. This enables early-stage methane leak detection for pipeline inspections, landfill monitoring, and utility work.
Note: MOS sensors must be recalibrated after H2S exposure.
ppm MOS i-C4H10 — Isobutane Detector (PPM Range)
The new ppm MOS isobutane sensor detects i-C4H10 in the 0–2,000 ppm range, expanding the GX-6100’s capability for LPG monitoring and butane-related gas hazards at sub-LEL concentrations.
IR Sensors (NDIR) — Infrared Detection
NDIR (non-dispersive infrared) sensors are available for carbon dioxide (CO2), methane, and isobutane via the smart sensor slots. The CO2 NDIR sensor covers 0–10,000 ppm and 0–10% vol., with a 2-year warranty. NDIR methane and isobutane sensors cover 0–100% LEL and up to 100% vol. / 30% vol. respectively.
Super-Toxic Electrochemical Sensors
The smart slots also accept electrochemical sensors for a range of toxic gases:
- Ammonia (NH3): Range 0–400.0 ppm | Alarms at 25 / 50 ppm
- Chlorine (Cl2): Range 0–10.00 ppm | Alarms at 0.5 / 1.0 ppm | 1-year warranty
- Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN): Range 0–15.0 ppm | Alarms at 5 / 10 ppm
- Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2): Range 0–20.00 ppm | Alarms at 3 / 6 ppm
- Phosphine (PH3): Range 0–20.00 ppm | Alarms at 0.30 / 1.00 ppm
- Sulfur Dioxide (SO2): Range 0–99.90 ppm | Alarms at 2 / 5 ppm
