Maintenance-Free Design

Key components of the Solinst Waterra Pump are its footvalve and riser tube. Several different tubing sizes are available, with the largest being the D32 model, measuring 1" by 5/6" and offering flow rates up to 4 gallons/minute. High density polyethylene (HDPE) and Teflon® tubing are both available; HDPE, by far the more popular option, offers strength and reliable sampling at a low price point. Tubing is available in lengths up to 500 feet.

The unit's footvalve consists of a check ball housed in the valve body. The footvalve features a tapered end that facilitates self-tapping into either end of the riser tubing. Both stainless steel and Delrin® footvalves are available. With its simple construction and quality components, the Solinst Waterra is an excellent low-cost pump, ideal for dedicated use in long-term monitoring projects.

Sample Collection

The Solinst Waterra can be operated manually or, at greater depths, using a surface pumping mechanism. To collect a sample manually, begin by threading the footvalve into the tubing and lowering the unit into the borehole. When the desired sampling depth is reached, steadily raise and lower the pump assembly between 6"-12". The sample will enter the pump on the downstroke; with each upstroke, it will rise until being discharged on the surface.

To collect a sample of a volatile organic compound (VOC), begin with eight feet of 1/4" sample tubing. Place the sample tube in the riser tube, leaving about a foot of tubing sticking out, and develop a steady flow of water. Stopping the flow of water will cause the tube to act as a gravity siphon, which will produce undisturbed VOC samples.

Benefits

Benefits of the Waterra pump include its ease of operation and efficient purging rates, reducing time spent on tedious sample collection. The unit does not need to be repeatedly decontaminated and can be used in conjunction with a Solinst 860 In-Line Disposable Filter for deployment in turbid or silty groundwater. With the Waterra pump, you avoid cross-contamination and field and wash blanks, keeping your samples safe and your costs under control.
